Welcome to The Outside Initiative: Where Adventure Meets Fashion

At T.O.I., we're more than just an outdoor recreation retailer. We're a community of nature enthusiasts, fashion aficionados, and eco-conscious individuals who share a passion for the great outdoors.

Our Story

Our journey began with a simple observation our founder made. There's just not enough people of color represented in the great outdoors. When you think of an "outdoorsy" person you likely think of some white guy with a mustache and a flannel. We are dedicated to changing that. Not only do we want to inspire people of color to reconnect with nature. We want to make sure you look good doing it. Being Black Owned and Operated, T.O.I. was born out of a desire to break away from the ordinary and redefine how we as people of color engage with the world around us.

Our Founder

As a lifelong outdoorsman, our founder, Kayden, noticed something. Whether it was out in the hiking trails or on the ski mountain he couldn't help shake the feeling that he was the only one. "The only what?" you might ask. The only Black guy. As surprising as that may be to some, this is a reality that many of us have been trying to change for decades.

While studying urban planning and environmental policy at Tufts University, Kayden Kelley found joy in taking his friends out on their first hikes and when he realized the impact it had on their lives, he began to understand his purpose. He of course is not the only individual passionate about diversifying the great outdoors and we look forward to highlighting those of you who step outside and bring others with you!

Our Mission

Our mission is twofold. First, we want to get you outside. We believe that nature is the ultimate playground, a place where adventure, serenity, and self-discovery unite. Second, we're committed to making sure you look good on your journey. We believe that outdoor apparel can be both functional and stylish.

What We Offer

From t-shirts that blend comfort with fashion to satin lined beanies perfect for the trails and for your dreads, we offer a range of products that reflect our values. We're dedicated to  inclusivity and community building, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the outdoors. To do this, we have decided to donate 5% of all profits to organizations committed to getting underprivileged kids outside.

Youth In Action:

YIA creates opportunities for youth to become agents of change through transformative youth leadership programming. They create brave spaces for youth to bring their cultures, values, identities, and truths and then build the skills and tools to name and address equity issues in their communities. Through their leadership, Youth In Action works to create more caring and fair public institutions and systems.

MissionSAFE:

Many of their youth have experienced chronic complex trauma and we they use a trauma-informed perspective in all their work. Youth benefit greatly from the sense of belonging and connection with caring staff and have the opportunity to build their confidence through small and steady accomplishments and meeting challenges with the constant support of staff. They meet youth where they are – through schools, peers, and families – and outreach continually. Based in Boston.
